Some journeys are about seeing new places. The Char Dham Yatra is about becoming a different person by the time you return.
Four sacred shrines. One continuous pilgrimage through the Himalayas. Every year, thousands of devotees choose Char Dham tour packages to experience this revered journey that has inspired pilgrims for centuries. No photograph, no description, no guidebook prepares you for what it actually feels like to stand before the Kedarnath Jyotirlinga with snow-covered peaks all around you, or to watch the Ganga emerge from the glaciers above Gangotri, or to offer a prayer at Badrinath as the sun rises over the Neelkanth peak. Millions of souls have made this sacred pilgrimage, and almost every traveler returns with stories that are impossible to capture in words alone.
This is the Char Dham. And with the right tour package, it is within your reach.
Yamunotri — Source of the Yamuna River. Accessible via a 6 km trek. The journey begins here.
Gangotri — Origin of the sacred Ganga. The temple sits at 3,415 metres on the banks of the Bhagirathi River.
Kedarnath — One of the 12 Jyotirlingas, at 3,583 metres. A 16 km trek (or helicopter) through breathtaking Himalayan terrain.
Badrinath — Dedicated to Lord Vishnu, at 3,133 metres. The most accessible of the four and the most visited, with the magnificent Neelkanth peak as its backdrop.
The traditional order — Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, Badrinath — follows the flow of the sacred rivers from west to east.
A well-organized package removes every logistical burden so the yatra can be what it's meant to be — a spiritual journey, not a travel headache:
Day 1 — Arrive Haridwar → Ganga Aarti at Har Ki Pauri.
Day 2 — Haridwar → Barkot (Yamunotri base).
Day 3 — Yamunotri darshan → trek/pony ride.
Day 4 — Barkot → Uttarkashi.
Day 5 — Uttarkashi → Gangotri darshan.
Day 6 — Gangotri → Guptkashi (Kedarnath base).
Day 7 — Trek/helicopter to Kedarnath → overnight at dham.
Day 8 — Kedarnath darshan → descend to Rudraprayag.
Day 9 — Rudraprayag → Badrinath.
Day 10 — Badrinath darshan → Mana Village → Brahma Kapal.
Day 11 — Badrinath → Rudraprayag.
Day 12 — Rudraprayag → Rishikesh.
Day 13 — Departure from Haridwar / Dehradun.
The original Char Dham (established by Adi Shankaracharya) refers to four sites across India — Badrinath, Puri, Dwarka, and Rameswaram. The Chota Char Dham refers to the four Himalayan shrines in Uttarakhand — Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath. When people say "Char Dham Yatra" today, they almost always mean the Himalayan circuit.
Gangotri and Badrinath are road-accessible. Yamunotri requires a 6 km trek and Kedarnath a 16 km trek. Ponies, dolis, and helicopter services are available for those who need them. With proper preparation and a comfortable pace, the yatra is manageable for most age groups.
Budget packages start from ₹25,000 per person. Mid-range packages run ₹45,000 to ₹70,000. Premium packages with a helicopter for Kedarnath and luxury accommodation can exceed ₹1,00,000 per person. Prices are typically quoted on a twin-sharing basis, excluding flights.
Yes, with the right planning. Many elderly pilgrims complete the Char Dham every year. Helicopter for Kedarnath, ponies for Yamunotri, and a slower-paced itinerary with rest days make the journey very manageable. Always inform your operator of any health conditions in advance.
A minimum of 10 to 11 days is recommended to do the full circuit without rushing. Shorter packages exist but involve very long driving days and little time at each shrine. For a journey this significant, it's worth giving it the time it deserves.
People return from the Char Dham differently — not always in dramatic ways, but noticeably. A quietness. A sense of something settled. The mountains have a way of putting everything else in perspective.
Book your Char Dham tour package. Prepare well. Go with an open heart.
The Himalayas have been waiting far longer than you have.
